1. What is a mining camp?

mining camp is a fully equipped residential facility built at or near a mine site to house the workforce. Since most mines operate in remote areas — hours from the nearest town, often with poor road access — the camp provides everything workers need to live on site for the duration of their shift rotation.

What goes into a standard camp:

Accommodation: Dormitories or private rooms, covering workers through to supervisors and site management

Dining: A mess hall built to feed hundreds of people per shift, running across staggered rosters

Sanitation: Toilets, showers, and laundry blocks serving the entire camp population

Medical: At minimum a first-aid station or clinic, sized to handle the workforce on site

Recreation: Gyms, common rooms, internet access, and outdoor space

Administration: Site offices, meeting rooms, and areas for safety briefings

The physical build varies with the operation. A small exploration crew might run out of shared container units with communal bathrooms. A large-scale FIFO site might house 2,000 workers in single en-suite rooms with air conditioning, Wi-Fi throughout, and full fitness facilities. But the logic doesn't change: keep people rested, keep them healthy, and strip out the cost and lost productivity of moving them back and forth from faraway towns every day.

2. What are the 4 types of mining?

There are four main mining methods. Each affects camp planning differently — workforce size, how close workers need to be to the extraction point, and how long the camp will be needed.

In-situ (solution) Dissolves ore underground and pumps solution to surface. Used for uranium, potash. Small technical workforce. Compact camp with lab and monitoring facilities rather than large dormitory blocks.

3. What is a FIFO mining camp?

FIFO mining camp houses workers who fly in to the mine site for a fixed work rotation — typically 2-4 weeks on, 1-2 weeks off — then fly home. This model is standard in remote mining regions where building a permanent town makes no economic sense. It originated in Australia and is now common across Canada, Africa, and South America.

FIFO camps differ from standard construction camps in four key ways:

  • Privacy is a safety requirement, not a luxury
    Workers on 12-hour shifts need quality sleep between rotations. Single-occupancy rooms with private bathrooms are the expected standard. Poor rest leads to fatigue, and fatigue leads to safety incidents.
  • Climate control matters
    If the room is too hot, too cold, or too humid, workers don't sleep properly. Reliable air conditioning, proper insulation, and blackout window coverings are not optional — they are operational safety equipment.
  • Recreation and internet are retention tools
    Workers isolated for weeks need exercise, social contact, and connection with family. Gyms, common areas, outdoor spaces, and fast Wi-Fi are standard in any competitive FIFO camp. Camps without them lose workers faster — and replacing a FIFO worker costs charter flights and retraining.
  • Shift changeover creates peak loads
    When one rotation leaves and another arrives on the same day, dining halls, laundry, and check-in all hit maximum capacity at once. Camp layout must handle these surges without bottlenecks.
