Two strong earthquakes that hit southern California have recalled fears of the earthquake striking.
A magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurred at 10:33 am on July 4 in the Mojave Desert. The epicenter was located approximately 240 kilometers northeast of Los Angeles, near the California town of Ridgecrest. Later, in Friday evening, another earthquake, a 7.1-magnitude quake hits a remote region some 240km (150 miles) northeast of Los Angeles on July 5, prompting Angelenos to evacuate homes, bars, restaurants, and cinemas.
According to the Caltech seismologist — Lucy Jones’ warning, there was a 10 percent chance of another magnitude 7.0 or higher quake in the next week. California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that Kern County was in a state of emergency. The announcement of Newsom means that the state government will help Kern County and its subordinate towns to carry out emergency disposal and post-earthquake repair work.
To recover from the earthquakes, there are many things which are urgent to be done, such as mental health, building inspections and access to basic services — in the aftermath of the area's two recent big earthquakes. While no major damage was reported to buildings in the region after Friday’s quake, many people still are less confident about their buildings. Hundreds of tired residents sheltered or stayed outside because of the fear of the bigger further earthquake. But many families are crowded into their cars which might have some health problems in this weather.
